As a cost effective and unique method of sheltering a building structure, an air-inflated rooftop is an alternative to a conventional roof. Easy and quick to construct and costing considerably less than a solid roof, it was a great choice for the architects who created Archbishop Sentamu Academy in Hull on behalf of Hull City Council. However difficulties arose when birds were attracted to the building and began pecking holes.

To repair the holes made by the birds’ beaks, each visit required a high roof access service to repair the structure and these regular costs were running into the £thousands.

East Riding Group look after the school’s ground maintenance and were called in to find a practical way of keeping the birds at bay.

Stead Engineering provided a solution, constructing a bird stand combined with the mesh netting, this has provided the building with one of the most effective and durable ways of bird proofing structures against all urban bird species.

It provides a discreet barrier between the birds and the roof that is completely impenetrable, the bird stand doesn’t take away the roof’s striking appearance, making it not only practical, but also aesthetically pleasing.

Nathan Stead says: “This project just showcases the versatility that is required of our engineers. One day we could be working on food conveyor belts and the next we will have to come up with a solution to keep wildlife from damaging buildings. Our team enjoys solving these types of problems, it’s what engineers do.”

“While it may look simple, working with a structure as unique as this inflatable roof took special consideration and we’re very pleased with the result. We were able to come up with a solution without affecting the integrity of the building and allowing the light to flood through. The school has kept their unique roof with no more trouble from intruding beaks!”

Following the success of these works, East Riding Group was also called to a company in Manchester with a similar problem for a ten metre roof. As we always say: “The answer is YES, now what is the question?”.
