Cargill’s plant in Hull crushes rapeseed and specialty crops to extract crude oil and mid protein meal for use in food production, biodiesel and animal feed.

With 150 years in business, the company employees 155,000 around the globe working to nourish the world in a safe, responsible and sustainable way.

Factory fortnight is deeply engrained in the manufacturing industry, dating back to the 1950s. Shutdowns gave staff time off for the holidays and now this tradition continues to allow for vital summer maintenance.

For an organisation of this size, factory shutdown is a key point in the calendar to ensure the processing site is in ship-shape. So Stead Engineering was commissioned to manage a programme of works which included repairs to steel work, ducting and motor plates, plus many more.

The list also contained desirable extras that weren’t necessary to guarantee the plant’s future performance but affected maintenance of the conveyor systems.

Lyn Riley from Cargill said:

“The Stead team were very productive and worked hard to complete the initial list of jobs we had requested. We were impressed from the off as they were very professional and knowledgeable whilst all the time adhering to stringent Health and Safety and the completion of all required paper work.”

“We hadn’t expected them to start the other list of works and were delighted when they announced they would repair and maintain our conveyors too.”

“Although we had a variety of contractors on site to undertake the works, the team from Stead were chosen to win the 2019 Stephen Arundell Award for safest contractor on the Cargill site this year.”

“The award is named after Stephen Arundell who is retiring from his post as Plant Superintendent at Cargill.”

“We felt that Stead Engineering were well deserving of the award due to efficient operations, safety management and general positive demeanour.”

Nathan Stead, Managing Director of Stead Engineering says:

“We are very pleased to have received this award. We were unaware they even had an award in place but think it’s a lovely touch to name it after Stephen Arundell, who has worked for the company throughout his entire working life… from one hard working team member to another.”

“I also believe this sends a positive message to other customers and potential customers looking for a reliable engineering firm to design, build and install any type of fabrication services, conveyors systems or variety of other precision machining and industrial painting services.”
