Ian Rutter has worked at Stead Engineering for ten years as one of our engineers; designing, manufacturing and installing a vast range of products and items for different types of clients from restaurants to factories and docks to football stadiums.

Having enjoyed maths and all sports at school, Ian knew what he wanted to do for a career after doing his school work experience at BP in Hull.

He says: “I like the challenge this role gives me. We never really get two jobs the same so everyday is different. Over the years I've done thousands of jobs for our clients and it would be impossible to pick a favourite but I really enjoyed working on The Magpie Cafe at Whitby recently, where a fire had destroyed the upper floors. We went in to advise on the whole design and were able to give valuable advice to change the roof trusses from wood to steel, which would be stronger and also safer.

My advice to young people thinking about career choices would be to think about the subjects you enjoy at school and how you can apply them to a job, be keen to learn and show interest, enthusiasm is priceless.”
